Chicago’s Southside has been the stage to so many memories growing up. One of which has always been weekly practices at 6400 s. Kedzie, The Southwest Youth Collaborative.. better known as The University of Hip-Hop or simply: The Uni. Sadly at the time of you reading this, this program no longer exists. Many programs and institutions like it have not stood the test of time due to lack of funding and community backing. I’m sad to see this place gone, it held the southside B-Boy community together for almost fifteen years. Despite fighting for funding every quarter, volunteers pulled every resource together to keep such a place open and free to the local youth. That in itself showing how well this culture and community has stood together and strong in the face of many adversities. I hope to see the rise of the uni one day again!
